Like the quarry pond,
the cemetery, and the sand bar of which they sing, the musical
world of Angel Dean and Sue Garner is a seductive realm alive
with spirits and creatures, some more welcome than others,
yet all of an extraordinary piece. Go ahead, sing along. "Stranded,
and too much alone." Angel and Sue now live in Providence,
RI, and NYC, respectively; the two old friends are both Southern
wildflowers long ago potted in Yankee soil. Back when they
were both East Villagers in Manhattan, they played together
in Last Roundup, but this is their first CD together as a duo.
'Bout time, huh? Their voices blend beautifully on these tunes:
soulful, exuberant, dreamy, and wise. The power of the songs
(all but one of them, new originals) is exquisitely realized
in arrangements which feature the gals' own playing and contributions
by several good friends. Though some of these numbers may become
standards, you'll never forget where you heard them first. "You
can travel so far when the tide ebbs away." To make these
recordings, Angel had to leave husband-and-lyricist JT at home
with the dogs and hit I-95 for sessions at Sue's studio in
Brooklyn. Hopefully they'll log many more miles making lovely
sounds, but in the meantime, enjoy Pot Liquor. "Dreams
are fine, but better yet is waking up to what we know."
